5 September 2006

Well, Sunday was the big celebration commemorating 20 years of the Fu Sheng Yuan Tai Chi Academy. Fortunately, everything ran smoothly (very surprising for a tai chi event!) and I think everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

We started off the morning in the usual fashion, warm-ups and class. We cut the class short, and instructors and the odd more experienced student performed demonstrations of the Tai Chi 28 form, sword, sabre and push hands. I was asked to do the 28, sabre and push hands. When the instructors finished, Sifu also performed a bit of tai chi, followed by sabre. He's rather awesome to watch, but then again, he does have 70-odd years of experience! Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the performances as yet, so everyone will just have to wait a while before they can see more pictures of me doing silly things.

Once all the demonstrations were over, various instructors gifted Sifu with flags, trophies and other things to commemorate the anniversary. Then we all stood around and mingled for half an hour while we waited for the final surprise...We'd organised for the local Chung Wa (???) association to come and perform a Lion Dance. For the past few weeks, we'd been fundraising madly to be able to give the organisation a gift for their work. To help generate interest, I'd been taking my own chinese lion along to tai chi. He's just a marionette puppet, but everyone now wants him, 'cos he's just so cute!

And a few photos from the authentic Lion Dance:

I loved how one of the lions stopped right in that gap between two people in front of me and looked directly at me long enough to take that pic. :)
