It's kinda depressing to think we're already over half-way through the year. It's even more depressing to think that we're not making much of a profit at tai chi at the moment, either. Class numbers seem to be rather low this term. I know at Loftus, we've had five people enrol into the beginners level, and two of them are repeating it from last term. Meanwhile, we're spending huge amounts on hiring various venues around the Perth metro area, and advertising our academy.
I always wonder what stops people enrolling in courses half-way through a year. Is it because it's the middle of the year, and the middle of winter? Is it because a new financial year has started, and people are trying to be a bit more wise with money? Or maybe people just aren't keen on crawling out of bed on a Sunday morning, or heading out on a weeknight when it's so cold (okay, this is more like the middle of winter thing, but you get the idea).
Had a couple come into tai chi today. They apparently spoke to Sifu around this time last year and were interested in joining our classes. I don't think the guy was that interested in the tai chi, but his wife was keen. Apparently she wants to become an instructor, and wants to know how she can become one. I personally think she could do with a bit more practice in our form (since she learnt a different form in China), and then it's up to Sifu. She also would like to teach the tai chi fan form.
Video of a guy doing Fan Tai Chi - this may not actually be the same style as the woman who turned up today does. I was watching his video on Yang Style tai chi and just giggling at how badly he does it. Then I realised he's doing Traditional Yang rather than Authentic Yang (which is what I do). And yes, there is a difference!
The tai chi fan is something I would love to learn - to be able to use a chinese fan like a weapon! But I think I'll stick with my sword and sabre for the time being. Although I really need to find the time and space to be able to practice these. Maybe I should go down to the local park and terrorise the neighbours?
